This is the old Horch factory in Zwickau . Horch were one of the four rings in what’s now the Audi logo. They’ve refurbished the place since.

Kinja'd!!!

This is a pre war Auto Union V16. They were quite a thing at the time. Still are, come to that. Driving one really quickly requires gent le man’s apparatus the size of watermelons.

Kinja'd!!!

This is a Trabant 601. It is less of a thing.

Kinja'd!!!

They all have something in common.

Both the cars were built in the Horch factory.

Ah yes Horch. Don’t hear too much about them. Or Wanderer. Or DKW. Come to think of it, Audi hasn’t jumped on the hype train for a while either.

And the Trabant's engine was a descendant of prewar DKW 2-strokes, one of the other rings in the Audi logo

If the cars go on fire, do they horch themselves?

a prewar V16 and a modern Trabant could have the same speed lol

Audi is latin for “Horch” and was formed by August Horch after he was forced out at  Horch.

Yes, from the F8. I had thought that only Wartburg used a pre war design.

You don’t see a lot of dualies on race cars anymore.

Given that the pre war Auto Unions could get to something better than 260 mph on record runs, that would be quite some going for a revisited Trabi...

They had more than 500 bhp which was quite something eighty odd years ago!

Interesting how similar that building is to one in here in Wisconsin . This was built in stages from 1913 to 1930.

That Auto Union V16 looks to have little or no suspension in the rear. Buy j suppose the gentleman driving it doesn't need the extra padding, as he brings his own with him.

I’ve actually seen one in the August Horch museum in Zwickau in 2018!

About the same era too. I guess this was how many factories were designed then. Why anybody thought a multi storey car factory was a good idea is another matter!

I bet the La Crosse plant was built by German contractors too. And at that time (at least before WW1) they spoke a lot of German building it.

Oh, our great grandparents weren’t dummies. I suspect that the material flow had the light stuff at the top such as interiors at the top floor. T hen things were assembled and they let gravity do the work.

A vertic al plant means a lot less distance traveled for the parts which might be a good thing when power and the machines to move things were at a premium.....

It was a different world. Then machines and energy were precious and people were cheap, Now it is the opposite.

Then it was machine stations made multiple parts and there were tons of people around. A compact vertical plant made sense. Today there are tons of machines and almost no people. a horizontal plant makes sense.

Nor then, but if your drivers complain of wheelspin at 100 mph and you don’t have wide wheels available....
